What is Social Emotional Learning?

SEL has been defined as "the process of acquiring the skills to recognize and manage emotions, develop caring and concern for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions and handle challenging situations effectively" (Devaney, O'Brian, Resnik, Keister, & Weissberg, 2006, p.11).

5 SEL Competencies:

What is social thinking?

"Social thinking is what we do when we interact with people: we think about them. And how we think about people affects how we behave, which in turn affects how others respond to us, which in turn affects our own emotions." Michelle Garcia Winner

Social thinking teaches all 5 of the SEL Competencies.

What is Wildcat WOW?

Ivy Hall celebrates students who go above and beyond expected behaviors.  Students and staff who see others exceeding expections submit Wildcat WOW slips.  At the end of each month, slips are drawn at random and students paint their hands on the wall bordering the interior of the school. Wildcat WOW reinforces students for demonstrating the SEL Competencies.  Click here to learn more about Wildcat WOW as well as monthly SEL themes at Ivy Hall School.
